The Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) has slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate
in the Bayelsa governorship election, Chief Timipre Sylva.
It said the party is desperate for power even in the face of defeat both at the polls and in the courts.
The party's state secretary, Godspower Keku, who said this in a statement, commended the judiciary for being “critical defender” of democracy in the 4th republic.
He
said it has on major occasions risen to restore confidence in the
people and the fabric of the nation through various landmark judicial
pronouncements.
The said the Appeal Court
judgement which upheld the earlier decision of the state election
petitions tribunal affirming the election of Governor Seriake Dickson, was in furtherance of judicial development.
“It
has been a major step in our nation’s judicial system, reaffirming the
sanctity of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man. T
"The
judgement of the Appeal Court reinforces our faith in democracy and the
crucial role the judiciary plays in safeguarding the wishes of the
people.
Probating and reprobating at the same time as Sylva did was nothing short of desperation for power”, Kenku said.
He
lauded Dickson's efforts at developing the state, pointing out what he
referred to as the “divisive and hate propaganda of the opposition
party” to blackmail the governor in the state.
The PDP called on President Muhammadu Buhari to check the excesses of some politicians perpetrating acts of criminality under the umbrella of the party at the centre.
