Prof Osunbor satisfied with polls process

Ex-Governor of Edo State, Prof. Oserhemien Osunbor, has expressed satisfaction with the state's Governorship electoral process.
In a report by The Punch, Osunbor commended the security agencies for maintaining peace and order shortly after casting his vote in Iruekpen area of Edo State.
The APC chieftain, who also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for the introduction new electoral process reforms said, “The security agencies have done well to ensure peace and order."
Continuing, Osunbor said: “The people are orderly. The electoral process is getting better; maybe people are now used to the system. I’m satisfied. I hope the entire system remains so till the end.”
Osunbor's take on the Governorship election is contrary to multiple reports of alleged violence and election malpractices which were largely debunked by INEC.

APC national chairman, Oyegun loses to PDP Oredo

According to a report by Punch Newspaper, Oyegun, who casted his vote at about 10:45am at his Oredo polling unit on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 lost to the opposition Party in the keenly contested governorship election.
The report further revealed that the same feat was achieved during the 2015 Presidential election in the state which saw the national chairman losing his polling unit.
In his word after casting his vote, Oyegun had said: “I am pleasantly surprised because this is the best turnout I have ever experienced. I hope it presumes that something good is about to happen. People are keen to express their democratic options and democracy has become totally widespread. It is a very good thing. It has been peaceful so far.
Osagie Ize-Iyamu, reportedly floored APC's Obaseki with nine votes at the end of voting, sorting and counting.
While Ize-Iyamu reportedly emerged with 78 votes, Obaseki trailed behind with 69 votes at the polling unit.
Oyegun and national leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu are currently on a war path with both parties getting sympathy from different zones of the ruling party nationwide.

INEC says collation of results will begin Thursday, September 29

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo, Mr Sam Olumekun, says collation of results for the governorship election in the state would commence on Thursday.
Olumekun disclosed this in Benin on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting with a National Commissioner and two Resident Electoral Commissioners at 11.20 p.m.
He, however, did not give reasons for the shift in date for the exercise.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the decision to commence the collation on Thursday could be traced to the late arrival of results from the 18 local government areas of the state.
A Correspondent of NAN who visited INEC office in Benin reports that security was tight while movement to the area had been restricted to only accredited officers and staff.
At the INEC office, party agents, Journalists and election observers were seen waiting for the commencement of collation of results from the local government areas.
A source close to the commission told NAN that those waiting for the collation had the option to wait or come back on Thursday for the exercise.

APC planning to manipulate results at mid-night – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC), is planning to change the election results in the middle of the night.
According to Daily Post, the PDP National Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye said “Having received results from our agents at approximately 1800 of the 2627 polling units spread across the 192 Wards in the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State, we can confirm that our party has attained a near unassailable lead in the Edo State gubernatorial election.
“The results so far confirm to us that our candidate has garnered approximately 55% of the total votes cast by voters. We have every reason to be confident that we will maintain this trend and coast home to victory.
“However, we are aware that members of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) led by Governor Adams Oshiomole, in collusion with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by Mrs. Amina Waziri, are relentless in their efforts to manipulate the results of this election.
“We are aware that Governor Oshiomole is currently moving from collation centre to collation centre with the objective of manipulating the results as much as possible.
“We will like to reiterate our earlier notes of warning. The Edo people, and our party, will resist any attempt to subvert the collective will of the people as expressed by their votes today.
“We urge our members and supporters in the state to continue keeping the faith by guarding their votes at the Ward Collation Centres and Local Government Collation Centres. Eternal vigilance is the price we all have to pay for victory.”
The PDP had earlier alleged that the APC planned with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the governorship polls.
Meanwhile, INEC has warned Nigerians to disregard any result posted on social media.

House suspends ex-Appropriation Chairman for 180 days

Abdulmumin Jibrin, former chairman of the House Appropriations committee, has been suspended from the Green Chamber for 180 legislative days.
Jibrin had accused Speaker Yakubu Dogara and three other principal officers of the House of Representatives of "criminal insertions" into the 2016 budget.
The vocal lawmaker has also called Dogara "corrupt" and a "shameless thief" in the past.
The quartet, Jibrin allege, padded the 2016 budget to the tune of billions of naira.
In this afternoon's ruling from the lower legislative chamber, Jibrin was also banned from holding positions of authority for the rest of the eighth Assembly.
It's unclear at this point what 180 days equates to with respect to a calendar year for our lawmaking body. Do the legislators sit for two or three days in a week? Are recess days part of the suspension?

Restore entertainment, leave allowance for judges - Atuguba

Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba has said judges and magistrates in the country must be given a “unique” remuneration system which would be different from all existing salary systems in Ghana.
Addressing the annual magistrates and judges’ conference at the La Beach Hotel in Accra, Wednesday, September 28, Justice Atuguba said the move will prevent judges from falling victims to bribery and corruption.
“I call on the Bar, the Judicial Council and the Bench to coordinate their efforts and engage the article 71 committees and other relevant authorities to press for, recognition of and response of the fact that the Bench has a unique and pivotal role to play in this country and its conditions of Service must correspondingly be unique and should not be considered in common with any generalized policy on pay structure or the like," he said.
“In this connection I call for the restoration of an enhanced leave allowance, substantial entertainment allowance, a handsome allowance for the loss of private professional practice as it is enjoyed by Doctors, Teachers, and others,” Justice Atuguba added.
He further called on judges and magistrates in the country to endeavour to live a secluded life away from the public in order for them not to fall into the hands of corrupt individuals who might want to bribe them to influence justice.
“The Anas exposé underscores the convention of life in seclusion on the bench.
“This convention seems to have waned on the altar of modernity but our predicament should lead to its vigorously reassertion. The observance of this convention and code of ethics will greatly insulate us from this social portaging arising from unbridled social interaction.
“It is better for a person on the bench to be wrongly perceived as anti-social than to be correctly perceived to be corrupt,” he said
Ghana was hit with a massive judicial scandal in 2015 when it was revealed in an exposé by Anas Aremeyaw Anas that Superior and lower court judges took bribes in order to free criminals.
Over twenty magistrates have so far been removed from office based on the recommendations of the committee formed to investigate allegations of “stated misbehavior” leveled against them.

Female police officer arrested for collecting bribe

A female police officer has been arrested in Edo State for collecting a bribe from a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reports say.
The unidentified officer was reportedly caught in the act by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Vanguard, the incident occurred at unit 28, ward 7 in the Ikpoba Okhai Local Government Area.

6 arrested for violating movement restriction

A combined security team set up to monitor the Edo governorship election has arrested six persons for disobeying restriction of movement order.
Mr Amadin Osayande, Edo Comptroller of Prisons and member of the team, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin that the suspects were arrested at Welfare junction, Upper Sakponba road, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, on Wednesday.
Osayande said that four men and two women were arrested inside a commercial bus during  the election.
He also said that the suspects said they were aware of the restriction of movement order, yet they went about their normal businesses.
Osayande added that there was restriction of movement and yet they were driving around the city.
“Actually, we all know that there is always restriction of movement during election, yet the suspects were parading the city.
“Apart from the restriction order, the suspects looked suspicious and needed to be investigated,” he said.
Other members of the combined security team are; the state Commissioner of Police, Commander, 4 brigade of the Nigerian Army, state Comptroller of Prisons, representatives of the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the  Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) .

Oshiomhole happy with impressive voters’ turnout

Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo has commended the electorate in the state for turning out in large numbers to cast their votes in Wednesday’s governorship election in the state.
Oshiomhole made the commendation shortly after casting his vote at Unit 2, Ward 10, in his Iyamho community in Estako West Local Government Area of the state at about 11 a.m.
I am very impressed with the turnout of voters in these polling units. What is happening in these three polling units is a perfect example of what election should be,” he said.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for adopting simultaneous accreditation and voting, adding that it was an improvement on the part of the commission’s performance.
I have always wondered why INEC wanted people to get accredited first and vote hours later.
“The poor people who are used to hardship had to carry the burden of our democracy by waiting the whole day.
“I believe INEC has made a sensible improvement in the election process.  This is a civilised way of doing election and a victory for the middlemen who cannot wait on the line.
“God wants us to enjoy democracy and I believe we the politicians should allow the people to have that.
“My joy is that people are ready to celebrate democracy by the way they have queued for the election,” the governor said.
He, however, expressed sadness over the alleged snatching of card readers from electoral officers in some parts of Edo Central Senatorial District by some thugs who reportedly shot indiscriminately.
“I don’t know how that happened because there ought to have been enough security in the polling units.
“At this point, it will be too difficult for one to draw a conclusion because this happened in only one unit of the over 2,000 polling units in the state,” he said.

Anenih sues for peace

Chief Tony Anenih, former Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday called for peace among the people of Edo as they participated in the gubernatorial election in the state.
Anenih made the call after casting his vote at Uzenema Primary School, Urue-Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area at about 8.20 a.m.
He said that there was need for the people to maintain peace during and after the poll “for the state to have full benefit of democracy’’.
The PDP chieftain expressed satisfaction with the timely arrival of electoral officials and materials as well as the peaceful conduct of the exercise in the area so far.
On security arrangement, the former minister of works said “as I said, it is too early to make a general statement”.
Meanwhile, Mr John Yakubu, deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in ongoing gubernatorial poll in Edo, has described the simultaneous accreditation and voting in the process as a perfect process.
“Rather than doing accreditation and coming back later to cast your vote, you do everything the same time and this is very good.
“I am alright with the whole process so far and I hope it continues that way, although I am hearing that there are pockets of violence in few areas around the senatorial district,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Yakubu voted at 10.05 a.m. I  Unit 8, Ward 3, Esan North-East Local Government Area.

Oshiomhole alleges that thugs fired shots to disrupt polls

The Governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole has expressed his displeasure at the activities of thugs whom he said fired shots at the Edo Central Senatorial District.
The Governor also alleged that some people snatched card readers from some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Oshiomhole said “I don’t know how that happened because there ought to have been enough security in the polling units.
“At this point, it will be too difficult for one to draw a conclusion because this happened in only one unit of the over 2,000 polling units in the state.”
He however expressed excitement at the turnout of voters for the ongoing governorship election.
The Edo state Governor also commended INEC for improving its operations.
He was especially impressed that INEC allowed voters to cast their votes immediately after their accreditation.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole has also alleged that the jailed underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was registered for the Edo election.

Oyegun says he can’t be heard speaking evil about APC leader

All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun has said that he will not disrespect the party’s National Leader, Bola Tinubu.
Oyegun made the comment in response to Tinubu’s call for his resignation via a statement released on Sunday, September 25.
“Asiwaju is a well-respected leader of the APC and as such, I cannot be heard speaking evil against him,” Oyegun said while speaking in Benin City, Edo State, according to ThisDay.
“You know we have a crucial election here in Edo which is my priority right now. I don’t want to lose focus and I know Asiwaju also wants us to win because we all worked hard for this. So may be after the election if there is need, I will speak if there is no need, I will relax.
“But all I can say now is that most of the things said in the papers about me are not true. I have always believed in internal democracy, that the credibility of primary must be taken seriously.
“I believe that if the primaries of parties are not credible, it may derail any democracy, so I don’t play with these things at all. Everybody knows me and I don’t joke with my credibility and I have tried to maintain it.
“Like I said, Asiwaju is our leader and we all hold him in high esteem, so I will never join issues with him. But may be after the Edo elections, after we must have emerged victorious, we may speak on some of the issues raised. So there is no problem at all.
“Edo is the focus for now and as you know this is my state, so it is a very serious election for us. So I want to be allowed to remain focused; then after the election we can speak,” he added.
Tinubu called for Oyegun’s resignation after accusing him of cheating during the APC governorship primaries in Ondo.

It’s like APC’s spokesman has been waiting for party leader to fight with Oyegun

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank has supported calls made by National Leader, Bola Tinubu for the resignation of party chairman, John Oyegun.
Tinubu urged Oyegun to resign after accusing him of cheating during the party’s governorship primaries in Ondo state.
Frank made his comments on Monday, September 26, while speaking at a press conference in Abuja.
“Based on these weighty allegations from our national leader and founding father of the party, I want to restate my earlier position that we must call for an emergency NEC meeting,” Frank said.
“If Oyegun knows that he has nothing to hide and that whatever Tinubu has said about him is not true, I am challenging him to immediately call for an emergency NEC meeting to enable us come together face to face and look ourselves in the face and tell ourselves the truth and see how we can resolve this internal crisis. If we cannot resolve this crisis now, we may never be able to resolve it.
“I am calling for an investigation of the whole process of the primary election in Ondo. I want to use this medium to appeal to Mr. President because it has gotten to a situation where he can no longer be silent on the party’s internal issues. The president must speak out and save our party. He is the leader of the party and must not leave the party in the hands of these people that cannot resolve one crisis.
“Every party member is loyal to the president and he should see the need to immediately call for an emergency NEC meeting to enable us come together and look at these allegations. They are not just mere allegations, but very critical ones which must be looked into by the party and a position taken.
“If we don’t do something, even APC supporters in Ondo State will sabotage the process for us because they are not happy. We must do everything possible to bring every aggrieved person together. If we don’t take emergency steps to resolve these issues, we will have ourselves to blame.
“I am giving Oyegun 14 days from today to convene a NEC meeting. If he fails to do so, I will mobilize members to demonstrate at the secretariat. I have started mobilizing NEC members to ensure that the APC leadership is made to do the right thing and summon a NEC meeting.
“Today, God has practically vindicated me in my struggle to save my party the APC. It is very clear that I was one of the first persons in the party who took the bull by the horn and said there are issues and a brewing crisis in the party. Then, I was alone as nobody saw where I was coming from.
“This crisis started when the issue of the National Assembly came up and I foresaw it then because of the decision the party took at that time against their party members, especially against the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“I foresaw the danger at that time when the party closed its eyes to the injustice against these two persons at that time. I came out to shout and nobody listened to me.
“When my immediate boss, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, left to become the Minister of Information, I was supposed to step into his shoes as acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, but they fought me for their own selfish interests because they knew that I am one person who will not allow them to do certain things.
“They deprived me of performing my duties and assigned my job to themselves, saying only Oyegun and the National Secretary can speak for the party. How is that possible in a political party that wants to allow justice to prevail?” he added.
Meanwhile, Oyegun has said that he will not speak evil of Tinubu despite the latter’s call for his resignation.

Governor is fighting with banks in Ekiti and APC is not finding it funny

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has criticized Governor Ayo Fayose over his attacks on banks in the state.
The Ekiti APC said further that the state cannot afford disagreements with the banks due to the current economic crisis.
The party made its comments via a statement issued by Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun on Monday, September 26.
The statement reads:
“Governor Fayose has personalised Ekiti State to the extent that whoever offends him offends the state and her people, which is dangerous to the economic survival of both the state and her people.
“Last time, he ordered all government’s agencies and workers to move their accounts from Ecobank simply because the bank refused to surrender the cash for its Community Social Responsibility projects to the governor when the bank insisted that it would carry out the projects like is the practice in other states of the federation.
“For this reason, the governor took offence, destroyed the culvert at the entrance of the bank and ordered government offices and workers to move their accounts from the bank, thereby forcing the bank’s closure in the state with Ekiti indigenes working in the bank losing their jobs.
“This time, because Zenith Bank washed its hands off election sponsorship fraud through which Fayose assumed power; he is fighting back by severing relationship with the bank by ordering all government offices and workers to move their accounts from the bank.
“As expected, Zenith Bank will close shop with attendant job losses among Ekiti indigenes working there, including sending wrong signals to the investing community that Ekiti is under a siege of a reckless and maximum governor that promotes  anti-investment policies.”
Meanwhile, Fayose has ordered all government agencies in the state to move their funds from Zenith Bank.
The instruction is believed to be connected to the bank’s freezing of Fayose’s accounts on the orders of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

APC plotting to rig poll NOT us,' says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied the allegation that the party is planning to rig the Wednesday governorship election in Edo State.
A statement signed in Abuja by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye on Saturday, September 24, said it the rigging story is false.
“We have read the comments attributed to the Deputy Director General, Obaseki Campaign Organization, John Osakue to the effect that our Party is working to rig the forthcoming Edo State Gubernatorial Election.
“This statement is false, misleading and totally in keeping with the All Progressives Congress (APC) principle of propaganda over no substance,” he said.
He said the PDP has since raised the alarm over the plans of the APC to manipulate the electoral process in Edo State.
“John Osakue’s comment is therefore a smokescreen designed to deceive Nigerians and was made to distract people from plans perfected by APC to rig the Election.
“The objective is to falsely curry sympathy from the Nigerian public while orchestrating and perpetrating their nefarious activities.
“We urge the Obaseki Campaign Organisation as well as the APC to stop peddling the falsehood,” he said.
Adeyeye said that the people of Edo have decided to vote PDP on Wednesday.
He urged the people to come out en masse to vote for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the PDP candidate in the election.

Assassins are after me and my family' Ex-Lawmaker cries out

Dr Chidi Lloyd, a former Rivers House of Assembly member, has called on security agencies to protect his life and that of his family members that were allegedly in danger.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Rivers Police Command have confirmed arsonists attack on the village home of the former House of Assembly Leader in Akpabu, Emohua Local Government Area.
Lloyd told NAN in Port Harcourt on Sunday, September 24, that his family is in the peril because of his political beliefs and association.
He said that the unprovoked attack on his residence has consumed his personal belongings such as library and other valuables.
“I have tried to imagine what might have been the cause of this unwarranted attack but cannot readily think of any.
“The only thing is, since the 2013 crises that engulfed the Rivers House of Assembly in which I participated, I have been living in great awe,’’ the ex-lawmaker said.
Lloyd said that he was arrested, detained and charged to court for attempted murder but the trial was discontinued by the then Attorney-General of Rivers, Mr Worgu Boms.
“When the former attorney-general in the exercise of his constitutional powers took over the prosecution, he discontinued the trial because the police authorities then made it impracticable for trial to continue.
“This was because the complainant approached the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court, seeking for an order to stop the police from releasing the case file,’’ he alleged.
According to Lloyd, the current Rivers Attorney-General, Mr Chinwenwo Aguma, in May 2016, filed criminal information in the Rivers High Court, before Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikaran, seeking to review the “nolle prosequi’’ entered by his predecessor.
“The trial is currently going on with an interlocutory order to the police to produce me to take plea even when no process was served on me.
“In spite of the pendency of the matter at the Court of Appeal, Justice Iyayi-Lamikaran, has refused to stay proceedings in the matter,’’ he alleged.
Lloyd also alleged that on Sept. 21, at about 10 a.m., Aguma was boasting in open court that they would produce me without the police.
“Since the police, a non-party in the matter had refused to produce me, they, the prosecution will ensure my appearance in court to take plea their own way.
“Just six hours later, my house was razed. I have painstakingly drawn this analogy so it will be clear to the world who my tormentors are,’’ he said.
Lloyd said that in spite the efforts to frustrate him from excercising his constitutional right, he had appealed the order for police to produce him in court and also written a petition to the Chief Justice of the Federation.

War brews in APC as Tinubu demands Oyegun's resignation

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says he has lost confidence in the national Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun.
Tinubu on Sunday, September 24, asked Oyegun to resign, accusing him of sabotaging the will of democracy in the APC governorship primary in Ondo State.
He said Oyegun bypassed the decision of the appeal panel that asked for a fresh governorship primary in the state following investigations that showed that the delegates’ list used had been tampered with.
An APC aspirant in the Ondo governorship primary election, Michael Olusegun Abraham, had faulted Oyegun over the emergence of Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) as the party's flagbearer in the gubernatorial poll.
Abraham is said to be Tinubu's candidate in the race.
A statement issued by Tinubu's media office reads: "The APC, a party born of the quest for democratic good governance, is under critical threat by those who managed to be in the party but never of it.
"From the party’s inception, the principles of democratic fairness and justice were to guide APC internal deliberations. Party founders realized that only by intramural fair dealing could the party remain faithful to the progressive ideals that we presented to the Nigerian electorate as our governing creed.
"If the party could not justly govern itself, it would find it difficult to establish and maintain just government throughout the nation.
"In essence, the party was the embodiment of a democratic promise made between its members as well as a democratic vow made to the public. Evidently, some errant members believe promises and vows are mere words to be easily spoken and more easily broken.
"Chairman John Oyegun has breached these good pledges in a most overt and brazen display. In doing so, Oyegun has dealt a heavy blow to the very party he professes to lead. It is an awful parent who suffocates his own child for the sake of a few naira.
"The party was supposed to buttress APC members elected to government at all levels. Because of Oyegun’s conduct of our affairs, the party is rapidly becoming an albatross to those it was meant to help.
"Oyegun’s comportment regarding the Ondo State primary will become the textbook definition of political treachery and malfeasance of the basest order.
"In early September, the state primary was held. A purported winner was named. Having faith in the ways of the party, Tinubu publicly accepted what he assumed to be a verdict honestly derived. As a democrat, one must face the possibility of defeat and accept such as outcome with as much grace as one would embrace victory.
"One of the few bright spots during the conduct of the primaries was Jigawa Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. He chaired the primary convention with decorum and impartiality. He was unaware that a tampered list had been slipped into the process.
"Indeed within hours of the announcement, news began to filter in that gravely disturbed me. Credible allegations of fraud troubled the waters. The delegate list had been materially altered by someone in a strategic position to so do.
"The names of over 150 valid delegates were excised to make room for an equal number of impostors. This was not a clerical error. The alteration was wilfully executed that the primary would be directed toward a chosen end that bore nothing in common with the will of most state party members.
"A cunning few had tried to deceive the many into believing they were outnumbered. A conspiracy to steal the Ondo primary had been uncovered."
The statement further said:
"Fortunately, the grand deception afoot had been unable to cover its tracks fast enough. Truth began to cry for justice. Several candidates filed petitions contesting the result. The party established an investigative board to review the evidence. In a two to one decision, the panel found the delegate roster had suffered tampering. The panel recommended that a new primary should be held using the valid delegate list. This recommendation was tabled before the National Working Committee (NWC).
"After many hours of deliberations spanning several days, a final vote was held by the NWC. Before hand, NWC members agreed that the decision of the majority would become the stance of the party. Such is the way of democracy.
"The NWC voted six against five to cancel the fraudulent results and hold an honest primary. For a moment, it seemed the party would restore its integrity by giving democracy a chance. However, those who sought to scam an entire state would not let the vote of 11 people spoil their enterprise.
"After the NWC vote, a noticeably agitated Chairman Oyegun proposed the NWC engage in prayer before concluding the meeting. Adhering to this chairman’s request, NWC members began to pray.
"Seeing that the others had taken his bait, Oyegun used the prayerful interlude to secretly excuse himself from the meeting. Contravening the NWC decision and in violation of all rules of fundamental decency, Oyegun decided to safeguard the fraud done in Ondo by perpetrating a greater fraud. Oyegun arrogated to himself the right to submit the name of Rotimi Akeredolu to INEC as the candidate of the party.
"Truth has finally come to light. There exists a regressive element in the party that cares nothing for the progressive ideas upon which this party was founded.
"They joined the APC because it was the best ride available at the time. Now they want to guide the party into the ditch. They want to turn the party into a soulless entity incapable of doing good, just like they are. When such a person tastes power, they shed all good restraint. They come to abuse the trust given them as if they are the owners of that trust and not its mere custodians. These people did little to build the party but now will do much to wreck it.
"Our party was to stand for change. Oyegun and his fellows seem to be on a different wave length. They are the cohort of Unchange.
"The APC wants to guide Nigeria into a better tomorrow. Oyegun and the cohort of unchange want to pull Nigeria back into the past where rigging and vote stealing were the old and new testaments of politics. They want the people to think that there is no alternative to their reactionary system of skewed politics and imperious government.
"Thus, they seek to turn the APC into a factory of the very political malpractices the people soundly rejected in the past election. To choke the APC in this manner is to kill the chance for progressive reform for the foreseeable future. Much more than the Ondo primary is at stake. Oyegun has revealed his team’s game plan: It is the destruction of progressive politics and governance on behalf of the people.
“As party chairman, Oyegun was supposed to protect our internal processes and be an impartial arbiter, a person in whom all had confidence. Instead, he donned the garment of a confident man, duping the NWC, the party, and INEC in one fell blow. He has robbed APC members in Ondo State of the chance to pick in a fair manner who they believe is the best candidate.
“As such, he has broken faith with the party and probably has broken a few laws. The consequences of what he has done are more expansive than a man of his scope can fathom,”
“With strong expectation, we await a response to Oyegun’s wrongdoing from those who clamored so long and loudly about Tinubu’s alleged role in the Ondo primary.
“Leading into the primary, a prominent lawyer from Ondo published lengthy missives alleging that Tinubu was a malicious hand intent on rigging the primary. His letters spoke of his great love for democracy and justice.
"Though Oyegun has assaulted democracy in a most public and vulgar way, this lawyer’s prolific pen will remain stilled. He dare not publish a word about this travesty. His silence will be sign for all who care to decipher its meaning.
“The plan was to point the accusing finger at Tinubu. With everyone focused on Tinubu, they would have distracted all attention from the heist they had set in motion. As fate would have it, the trickery they hoped to conduct in the shadows has come to light.
“Those who so actively attributed imaginary wrong to Tinubu now stand dumb and mute in the face of confirmed impropriety. They remain silent for reasons they cannot divulge. Oyegun and his ilk turn out to be gangsters adorned in the tunic of party authority.
“Oyegun has engaged in the strange math where five is greater than six. This smacks of how the PDP conducted its affairs and orchestrated its own downfall. Tinubu disparaged such malpractice when it was not in his party. Tinubu surely disowns it now that it has invaded the party he helped bring to fruition.
“Tinubu has consciously refused to hold any official position with the party to avoid the perception that he was trying to control all and sundry. Tinubu has even kept his peace for some time despite many things that happened within the party that were not quite right. He exercised this forbearance because the party is young. A collective endeavor cannot avoid the mistakes and errors of organizational newness and evolution.
“Yet, the wrongs Oyegun committed had nothing to do with newness or the mistakes occasioned by the path of reform. His actions are in the nature of the old wrongs that have afflicted our national politics much too long. If Oyegun wants to walk backward into the past, he has every right to it. However, he has no right to drag the party or any of us with him. Against our choosing.
“The informal title of national leader of the party was given to Tinubu at the onset which he accepted it as a sign from those who wished to recognize my contributions to the party’s formation.
"It is an honorific title which he has been proud to wear until today. I would rather not have any title yet reside in a party that honors democracy than hold a title in a party that says it honors me but that treats justice with indecency. I find greater honour and comfort where democracy and fairness are found and respected.
“Oyegun has done the irredeemable. His coup is an insult to party and to patriot, to reason and to the reform agenda of this government. To remain silent would be to admit the defeat of the reform and progressive change many have labored to bring forth. While the forces resistant to change and reform are strong, Tinubu dare not submit to them.
"Tinubu encourages all party members not to submit to them. If we acquiesce in this wrong, the one greater than this shall cascade upon us.
“Oyegun’s transgressions are a warning. He is but the mercenary of forces that seek to return the nation to the old ways. If they get away with this infraction, no telling what or whom they will undermine tomorrow. Much is at stake. On the chopping block, lies the future of the political party in which the majority of voters had placed their confidence. To rescue the party, Oyegun must go. He has shown that he and democratic fair play cannot exist in the same party at the same time.
"If Tinubu is to choose between John Oyegun and progress toward a better Nigeria, the choice has already been made."
The national leader, however, called on the party's faithful and everyone who cares about rebuilding a better Nigeria to reject Oyegun and his army of evil geniuses before they erode the reputation "we have built and all we hold dear.”

New York Times endorses Democratic candidate for US president

The New York Times endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton for the White House on Saturday, saying she is more qualified than Republican presidential rival Donald Trump to handle the challenges facing the United States.
The newspaper described Clinton as "one of the most tenacious politicians of her generation" and said she had displayed a command of policy and diplomatic nuance while building a reputation for grit and bipartisan cooperation.
"A lifetime’s commitment to solving problems in the real world qualifies Hillary Clinton for this job, and the country should put her to work," the Times said of the former secretary of state and U.S. senator from New York.
Clinton will face off against Trump on Monday night in the first of three presidential debates, with opinion polls showing her once sizable lead over the New York businessman narrowing amid continued public doubts about her trustworthiness.
The Times said Clinton's mistakes had distorted perceptions of her character, but praised her work restoring U.S. credibility in foreign affairs as secretary of state and on behalf of children, women and families throughout her career.
"Mrs. Clinton has shown herself to be a realist who believes America cannot simply withdraw behind oceans and walls, but must engage confidently in the world to protect its interests and be true to its values," the newspaper said.
It said Clinton's decision to use a private email server for government work as secretary of state deserved the scrutiny it has received in the campaign, but considered alongside the real challenges facing the United States it "looks like a matter for the help desk."

US President says new black history museum tells story of America

President Barack Obama on Saturday expressed hope that a new national museum showcasing the triumphs and tragedies of the African American experience will help to bring people together as the nation reels from recent racial upheaval.
Speaking at a dedication ceremony for the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Obama said that the story of black America is the story of America.
"This national museum helps to tell a richer and fuller story of who we are," said Obama.
"Hopefully, this museum can help us to talk to each other. And more importantly, listen to each other. And most importantly, see each other.
Black and white and Latino and Native American and Asian American - see how our stories are bound together," he said standing on a stage outside the bronze-colored, latticed museum.
The museum, located on the National Mall, officially opened its doors on Saturday.
It contains 36,000 items that trace the journey of African Americans from slavery in the 1800s to the fight for civil rights in the 20th century and lauds modern icons, such as media mogul Oprah Winfrey and tennis champion Serena Williams.
With a ring of a bell, Obama and wife Michelle and four generations of an African American family inaugurated the $540 million museum designed by Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye, who was inspired by Yoruba art from West Africa.

Police arrest 4 for diverting rice meant for IDP

The Katsina Police Command on Saturday said it has arrested four persons for allegedly diverting tonnes of rice meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East Zone.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Salisu Agaisa, told newsmen in Katsina that the suspects has claimed to be customs agents.t would be recalled that the Federal Government had directed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to distribute rice it seized from smugglers to the various IDPs camps.
The police spokesman said the suspects were arrested after they offered to sell the commodity to one of the prominent persons in the state.
“One of the suspects had called the prominent person through a mobile phone that they have five trucks of the diverted rice for sale.
“Our investigation also shows that the suspects had concluded arrangement to sell a bag of rice to that person at the rate of N12, 500 per bag,’’ he said.
Agaisa said the suspects were later arrested at Liyafa Palace Hotel in Katsina where they had lodged for 21 days.
He said the suspects would be prosecuted after investigations were completed

Governor lays foundation stone of N1.2bn school

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has laid the foundation stone for the construction of the N 1.2 billion Government Secondary School in Balle, headquarters of Gudu Local Government Area of the state.
Tambuwal, who laid the foundation on Saturday, said that Gudu has remained the only local government in the state without a Senior Secondary School.
”The state government embarked on the project as the area had remained the only one out of the 23 local governments of the state without a Senior Secondary School.
”The school will be a co-educational one, both for boys and girls.
”It will also attract students from the state, other states of Nigeria and others from the neighbouring Niger Republic.
”Students of the school would be taught in both English and French,’’ the governor said.
Tambuwal said that the contractor had since been paid 30 percent of the contract sum while the project would be completed in the next four months.
The governor also promised to make funds available for the completion of the project on schedule and according to specifications.
”Education is key to success both in this world and in the hereafter.
”The school is aimed at improving enrolment, retention and completion of students across the state.
”It is also aimed at improving equal access to education for both the boy and girl child in the state.
”When you educate a girl, you educate the society and when you educate a boy, you educate only an individual,” he added.
Tambuwal called on the contracting firm to complete the work on schedule, warning that compromise by supervising engineers would not be condoned.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, commended the state government for embarking on the project.
Abubakar also stressed the need for all children to have equal opportunities to education.
The monarch described illiteracy as a ”disease” which makes people to follow others blindly.
Abubakar decried street begging by some children, saying that such an obnoxious act was unIslamic.
The sultan further urged wealthy individuals to provide scholarship to children of the less privileged.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Jabbi Kilgori, said that the project consists of 12 classrooms, laboratories, library, hostels, staff quarters and clinics among others.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tambuwal also inaugurated the disbursement of N211 million grants of the Nigeria Partnership For Education Project and the World Bank

Suspected terrorist group threatens to bomb U.I before Oct. 1

A suspected Islamist sect named al-wilayat al-Islamiyya Gharb Afriqiyyah, has made threats to detonate bombs at the University of Ibadan before the commemoration of Nigeria's independence.
In a letter written to the university, the group accused the institution of bringing about doom to the country through the introduction of western education.
“You people are an embarrassment to Nigeria and are the people that brought in western education to Nigeria."
"You doomed this nation and in turn you all are going to be doomed."
"Most of you are going to die before Independence Day. You will not spend the Independence Day in peace, you and your students."
“Detonation will start going from tomorrow till Independence Day and there is nothing you can do as we are among you."
"Even your little searches at the gate won’t do anything. By the time we are through with you, your government will be sorry.”
Olatunji Oladejo, the Director of Communication of UNIBADAN dismissed the threat as the activities of mischievous people.
He said, “I also got it. Anyone could instigate such thing. Some people could be mischievous."
"Our international students are having their carnival on the campus and everywhere is peaceful."
"I attribute it to the handiwork of mischievous individuals and vehemently deny any commotion.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed reports of the threat.
“We have received the information. The state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, working in concert with the other security agencies, has put in place all necessary security arrangement to forestall such an ugly incident."
“We have deployed our intelligence officers to provide adequate security in the school."
"As it is, it is still a rumour but we don’t want to take things for granted and because of this, we have provided adequate security, not only for the school, but for the people of the state."
“We enjoin members of the public to go about their lawful businesses and to be law-abiding."

President ends US trip, says outing was successful

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the United States for ensuring efficient security and administrative arrangements at the 71 Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA71) in New York.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, September 24, by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina.
According to the statement, the President gave the commendation while addressing newsmen at the conclusion of his five-day activities during the UNGA71.
He said the outing was successfull.
Buhari also commended officials of Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for demonstrating “that we still have capable officers in our Foreign and civil services”.
He saluted the Nigerian officers for the “tireless effects in projecting a positive image to our country, even in difficult times.”
The president used the opportunity of the media parley to review all his major and side events during the visit.
He highlighted the issues on which he sent a clear and direct message to world leaders.
“I highlighted the need for the international community to work together to liberate humanity from poverty, save our planet from the devastation of climate change and rid the world of terrorism for a more peaceful and prosperous future.
“I mentioned that the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) arising from Boko Haram terrorism is of particular concern to us.
“For this reason, we have taken concrete steps to address their humanitarian needs and to ensure that necessary conditions are established to enable the voluntary return of the displaced persons to their homes in safety and dignity,’’ he said.
The President acknowledged that Nigeria as a developing country had been adversely affected by the global economic downturn
“We are undeterred and have embarked on a wide range of reforms in our efforts to diversify our economy.
“And to shift emphasis to mining, agriculture, industrialization, infrastructure development and the creation of the enabling environment for Foreign Direct Investment,” he said.
He also noted that “fighting corruption remains of prime importance to our administration.’’
According to him, the campaign is already yielding positive gains including significant stolen assets recoveries.

PDP says Timipre Sylva is desperate for power

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the Bayelsa governorship election, Chief Timipre Sylva.
It said the party is desperate for power even in the face of defeat both at the polls and in the courts.
The party's state secretary, Godspower Keku, who said this in a statement, commended  the judiciary for being “critical defender” of democracy in the 4th republic.
He said it has on major occasions risen to restore confidence in the people and the fabric of the nation through various landmark judicial pronouncements.
The said the Appeal Court judgement which upheld the earlier decision of the state election petitions tribunal affirming the election of Governor Seriake Dickson, was in furtherance of judicial development.
“It has been a major step in our nation’s judicial system, reaffirming the sanctity of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man. T
"The judgement of the Appeal Court reinforces our faith in democracy and the crucial role the judiciary plays in safeguarding the wishes of the people.
Probating and reprobating at the same time as Sylva did was nothing short of desperation for power”, Kenku said.
He lauded Dickson's efforts at developing the state, pointing out what he referred to as the “divisive and hate propaganda of the opposition party” to blackmail the governor in the state.
The PDP called on President Muhammadu Buhari to check the excesses of some politicians perpetrating acts of criminality under the umbrella of the party at the centre.

Oshiomhole declares Sept. 27, 28 as public holidays

The Edo State Government has declared September 27 and 28 as public holidays to enable electorate participate in the state's governorship election.
The election is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole made the declaration on Saturday, September 24 at a grand reception organised by the organised labour union for him.
He said the holidays will enable workers travel to their places of registration and participate in the voting exercise.
On the support given to him by labour,  the governor expressed delight in the constructive criticisms offered by the union in the last eight years, adding that they helped in shaping his policies.
“In spite of their contestation sometimes, both parties have always found a meeting point to bridge their differences,’’ he said.
He urged members of the union to extend same support to the APC Governorship Candidate, Mr Godwin Obaseki by voting enmasse for him on Sept 28.
According to him, Obaseki has undergone tutelage in governance under the outgoing administration and therefore fit to rule.
He said there is the need to reciprocate the union gesture, adding that to do this, the union should ensure that Obaseki is returned as governor.
He also said the State Civil Service has been upgraded, saying the migration to pension services is now smooth.
“Retirees can now begin to access their pensions immediately they retired and there is no need for tranches again,’’ he said.
The governor, however, advised the APC governorship candidate not to abandon the workers if elected.
