On September 30, 2016, Oluwo of Iwo, Oba
Abdulrasheed Akanbi, subtly accused some renowned pastors of not being
true representatives of God.
In an attempt to stress the divine authority of traditional rulers, he said the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, the founder of Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, and Imams do not have total divine authority.
"The
importance of a traditional Oba cannot be over emphasized. The words
and utterances of the Oba holds more divine relevance than any man who
is not a king.
The power that God
almighty bestowed upon a king cannot be overemphasized. Sadly, the
highly placed throne of a traditional king has been relegated due to
loss of value for culture and misconception of history.
Any
nation that relegates the title of Oba has lost every sense of
leadership that represents a divine purpose of the almighty. Religious
leaders such as pastor Adeboye or bishop Oyedepo and Imams are
not the representative of God but the Obas are. They can only pray but
do not have the authority to decree" , he said.

This statement created a huge debate on social media, causing the traditional ruler to retract his statements.
In an interview with a Punch correspondent, the monarch said he never attacked these two men of God, adding that his words were twisted.
“What they are saying is not true, I didn’t attack them. (Adeboye and Oyedepo). I did not say they are not men of God.
I delivered a lecture organised by the City People Magazine and spoke about the functions of Obas in the 21st Century.
I said Obas are the representatives of God on earth and men of God are messengers of God. That was where I think they twisted, but I never said they are not men of God", he stated.
