The Comptroller-General of
Customs, Hameed Ali has said that the organization will ban the
importation of cars through land borders if President Muhammadu Buhari approves.
Ali said further that the ban would help to put a stop to the menace of car smuggling.
He made the comments on Tuesday, October 25, while meeting with the Senate Committee on Customs in Abuja.
“We (customs) are giving Nigerians with fake customs papers grace to pay their duty or risk confiscation of their vehicles,” he said according to Daily Trust.
“I
am waiting for the President Muhammadu Buhari, to give me the
permission to ban importation of cars through land borders to curb
smuggling,” he added.
Ali
also said that the service would soon auction some vehicles which were
seized from the Imo State Government due to non-payment of customs duty.
